For years, my husband Bill and I came to Sonoma from the Bay Area for weekends and holidays. We visited wineries, walked around the plaza, and enjoyed the slower pace. Each time we left, we found ourselves thinking about how lucky the people were who lived here. Gradually, Sonoma became more than a favorite place to visit. It became the place where we imagined spending our retirement.

My relationship with Sonoma began long before I lived here.
My husband Bill and I spent about thirty years in the Bay Area, first in Walnut Creek and later in San Francisco. Like many people, we began coming to Sonoma on weekends and holidays. We would visit wineries, stroll around the plaza, and enjoy spending a day somewhere that felt both beautiful and welcoming.
At the time, wine tasting was a little different than it is today. Many wineries still offered free tastings. Even when there was a fee, it was often applied toward a bottle of wine. We joined several wine clubs along the way, which seemed like the natural thing to do after so many enjoyable afternoons tasting wine and meeting people.
But it was not only the wineries that kept bringing us back. Sonoma had a charm that was hard to ignore. It felt relaxed and interesting, with natural beauty all around it. It offered a welcome change from the energy and pace of the Bay Area.
The more often we came, the more we imagined what it might be like to live here. We would spend the day enjoying the town and leave thinking how fortunate the people were who got to call Sonoma home.
Eventually, those visits began to feel like a glimpse of our future.
When retirement approached, Bill and I talked seriously about where we wanted to live. By then, the answer seemed clear. We already knew Sonoma. We enjoyed its beauty, its slower pace, and the feeling we had whenever we were here.
We decided that when retirement came, Sonoma was where we wanted to be.
We had chosen the town. We still needed to find the house.
