I Was Born Here

These stories are about people who were born and raised in Sonoma. Together they preserve the memories, traditions, and changing history of Sonoma through the eyes of those who have always called it home.

Unlike the other pyramid levels, this section does not yet have enough stories to identify common themes. As the collection grows, this introduction will be replaced by What These “I Was Born Here” Stories Tell Us—an essay based on the shared experiences of Sonoma’s native sons and daughters.

Their stories offer a perspective that no newcomer can provide. They remember neighborhoods before they changed, schools that shaped generations of families, businesses that have disappeared, and traditions that continue today. They have watched Sonoma evolve not from the outside, but from within.

As more lifelong residents share their experiences, this collection will become a record of Sonoma’s history told through personal memories rather than history books. It will preserve how the town has changed across generations while also revealing the values and traditions that have endured.
