2026 – Sonoma Stories (Under Development) – Don Lundgren

  • After working on storytelling projects in San Pancho, I began to wonder if something similar could exist in Sonoma—a simple way for people to share their own experiences and help tell the story of the community.

  • In recent years, I’ve been working on a project called My Life Stories via ChatGPT—a simple way to help people turn their experiences into stories.

While running workshops in San Pancho, Mexico, something unexpected happened.

I began to see that individual stories could become something larger—a way to capture the story of a whole community.

That led to the creation of the San Pancho Stories website.

    It’s a simple idea:

People write their own stories—about visiting, living, or helping build the town—and together, those stories create a living history.

    A Similar Idea for Sonoma

That experience led me to a question:

Could something like this exist in Sonoma?

Not as a formal history, but as something more personal.

A place where people could share:

    • Why they came

    • What they found

    • How they became part of the community

    What Sonoma Stories Could Be

Sonoma Stories would be a simple community storytelling project.

    Its purpose would be:

To capture and share the experiences of people who are part of Sonoma—past and present.

These would not be stories written by historians or journalists.

They would be written by the people themselves.

    Anyone could contribute.

You wouldn’t need to be a writer—just someone with a story to tell.

    Why It Matters

Places like Sonoma change over time.

What people experience today may be very different from what others experienced 10, 20, or 50 years ago.

Unless those stories are captured, they are often lost.

    Where This Might Go

This is still an idea in progress.

    It would need:

    • People willing to share their stories

    • A small team to help organize and publish them

    • A simple structure to make it easy to participate

If it feels useful, it could begin with a small pilot—just a few stories—and grow from there.

  • These reflections highlight a few themes that often emerge when looking at how communities evolve and preserve their history.

    Light Insights

    Stories Create Connection

Personal stories allow people to understand a place—and each other—in a deeper and more human way.

    Every Voice Matters

When stories come from the people themselves, a more complete and authentic picture of a community begins to emerge.

    Simple Participation Unlocks Contribution

The easier it is to contribute, the more likely people are to share their experiences.

    Small Starts Can Grow

Community projects don’t need to begin fully formed—they can start with a few stories and grow over time.

    Shadow Insights

    What Isn’t Captured Is Lost

Without intentional effort, the lived experiences of a community can quietly disappear over time.

    Ideas Need Ownership to Survive

Even meaningful ideas require local commitment and participation to become real.

    Deeper Theme

Communities are not just places—they are collections of lived experiences that only endure if they are shared.
